Getting Ready for a Career Change

Career Change

If you are bored with your current job, make a list of the activities you still enjoy and those that you don't like.

Add a list of tasks you would like to be able to do, even if you have no experience.

Take a look at your list and ask yourself how many of the items are tasks you could do in your present job, if given the chance. Try discussing the possibilities at your next appraisal and don't forget to look into training, as mentioned yesterday.

If you find you are unable to make any changes, think about gaining some extra skills through volunteering.

Does your present employer provide any form of training? If you are bored in your current job, learning a new skill or improving an existing one could make a big difference to how you feel about the job.

And it will be another advantage to add to your list of abilities when it comes to looking for a new job.

Speak to your manager to see if there is a training budget and find out what is on offer.

If you aren't able to train through work, consider doing some training in your spare time.

There are many courses available online and in evening classes at adult education institutions.

Look at the job you would like to move to and discover which new skills you need - and then find a way to get them.

Career Change Questions

Questions to ask yourself regarding Career Change

Do you feel trapped in your present job? Think about the reasons - did something happen to change how you felt about work or did the feeling just creep up on you? Did you enjoy the job when you started and are you now bored because you are doing the same thing day in day out?

Is there anything you can do to make yourself feel better at work? You may want to answer that with the word "quit", but since you probably need to find another job first, think about ways of making your present situation better in the meantime.

Career Change for the New Year

New Year, New Career

This is the most popular time of year to think about changing career. The beginning of the new year makes us stop and take a lot at what we've achieved and where we're going.

If you are dissatisfied with your career, what can you do to change it? Change isn't always easy if you've accumulated responsibilities, such as a mortgage and a family.

You need to start by evaluating your present situation - what do you like and dislike about it? Are there any small changes you could make as a first step towards a new career? Could you, for example get some additional training in your present job?

To be continued.

Self employment - deciding which business is right for you

Self employment
Self-employment is becoming an increasingly popular option for people who wish to change careers, earn a second income or some extra cash to put towards their retirement.

However, it isn't always easy to know which business you should set up. There are several important considerations. Today we'll consider:

Start-up costs.

More traditional small businesses, such as corner shops or franchises require a fairly hefty injection of cash. Others, such as setting up at home or in a clinic as a practitioner of alternative medicine, are less costly, but still involve payment of rent or taxes to allow you to operate in a particular area. Online businesses require either a lot of money or a great deal of time.

It's important to choose a business in a field about which you feel excited and in which you have a strong interest - you'll be spending a lot of time there!

Having established the area in which you'd like to work, make sure you research the costs involved before coming to a decision.
